Hollywood figures oppose major media merger

More than 1,400 actors, directors, and industry professionals in the United States have expressed clear opposition to the planned merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).

Signatories—including Emma Thompson, Mark Ruffalo, Javier Bardem, and Denis Villeneuve—voiced their concerns in an open letter criticizing the merger plan involving Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

The letter argues that the merger would further consolidate the media industry, reduce competition, and negatively impact both industry workers and audiences.

It warns that, if completed, the merger could lead to fewer jobs in the production ecosystem, higher costs, and more limited choices for viewers. The signatories also stressed that the industry is already under “serious pressure.”

The letter expresses concern that support for the merger may prioritize the interests of a small group of powerful stakeholders rather than the public good, potentially harming the industry’s independence, diversity, and integrity.

More than 1,400 actors, directors, and other industry professionals—including many Hollywood stars—signed the letter, clearly opposing the deal.

Company response

In response, Paramount Skydance stated that the merger would create more opportunities for industry workers and increase content production.

The company said it aims to release at least 30 high-quality films annually.

After months of negotiations, Paramount Skydance announced on February 28 that it had reached a definitive agreement to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery.
