Serbian embassy staff in Iran on their way to Baku, says President Vučić
The staff of the Serbian Embassy in Iran are on their way to Baku, President Aleksandar Vučić told TV Una, adding that an attack on Oman occurred this morning, CE Report informs via Tanjug.
“Our personnel (from the embassy) are on their way to Baku. This morning you heard some people lecturing us, saying ‘drive us to Oman by car or bus and then organize planes for us, go around via the Indian Ocean, don’t cross the Gulf, reach Oman and extract us to Serbia from there,’” Vučić said.
“Imagine if we had sent buses and someone had hit the convoy — then they would have asked why we did that. If we had stayed in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, nothing would have happened,” Vučić said.
He emphasized that he must take care of all these matters. Speaking about current global developments, he stressed that Serbia must understand its position in the world, which, as he said, is difficult but guarantees peace and freedom, rather than engaging in partisan passions.
“I am a Serb who protects Serbia’s interests and who will not curry favor with Washington, Brussels, Moscow, or anyone else in the world, but will express the views of a sovereign and independent country. And nothing more than that,” President Vučić said.
President Vučić stated that the Serbian Embassy in Tehran was damaged by shrapnel and was not the target of the attack, adding that the embassy staff in Iran will withdraw toward Baku and Azerbaijan today.
“The embassy was damaged. Our embassy was not the target. The target of the American strike was the ‘Pasdžar’ base, but of course shrapnel and debris damaged our embassy,” Vučić told TV Prva.
He noted that for Serbian citizens currently in Iran — 14 according to official data — it is important that the embassy staff will withdraw toward Baku and Azerbaijan today.
“We have done everything according to protocol. The documentation will be destroyed, burned completely — everything that could remain to anyone — in accordance with procedures and rules. Our ambassador will go to Baku today with the rest of our diplomatic mission staff, but he will return to Tehran at his personal insistence because we have a married couple with a child there and we want to help that family in every possible way. The procedure and situation are complicated, so we want to see how to assist those people,” President Vučić said.
