The 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will be held in Istanbul through to April 19.

The Assembly is hosted by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, chaired by Numan Kurtulmus.

The main theme will be “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations,” Numan Kurtulmus told a press conference.

The meeting will bring together 155 delegations, including 77 parliament leaders and more than 800 MPs, or a total of about 2,500 participants, CE Report quotes BTA.

A Bulgarian delegation will also take part, including Stefana Karaslavova, Secretary General of the National Assembly and member of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments, Teodora Angelova, Ekaterina Georgieva, and Stefka Aleksandrova. The Bulgarian delegation is expected to participate in the regular meetings of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments.

The situation in Gaza and global peace will top the agenda. On the programme is the second meeting of the interparliamentary group in support of Palestine, in which at least 30 countries are expected to participate.

Kurtulmus said that the focus of what is happening in the region is Palestine and that this should not be forgotten, adding that Israel’s expansionist and maximalist demands are the most important problem in the region.

Emphasizing that countries in the region must remain vigilant and prepared for tensions, conflicts, and major upheavals, the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament said that “Türkiye is making exceptional efforts to reduce tensions and end wars in the region.”

The Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union is the main governing body of the global organization of parliaments, which meets twice a year. It adopts resolutions on international issues and promotes peace, democracy, and sustainable development through parliamentary diplomacy. Delegations from national parliaments around the world participate in it. The current assembly is the spring session.
