African dust to hit Greece, causing ‘muddy rain’

Climate

Dust transferred from Libya and Egypt toward Greece is expected to affect the entire country between Tuesday and Thursday.

According to AtmoHub, the online portal for information on air quality in Greece, the dust transfer will be accompanied by extensive rainfall, initially in Western Greece (31/3) and then, on April 1-2, across the entire country, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.

This will cause the phenomenon of "muddy rain” in several areas across Greece, while also contributing to a reduction in dust concentrations near the surface.

However, southern regions and those with more limited rainfall are expected to experience greater decline in air quality on Wednesday and Thursday, mainly in the Cyclades islands, Crete and the islands of Dodecanese (especially Kasos, Karpathos, Symi and Rhodes).

AtmoHub is coordinated by the NOA - ReACT team of IAASARS/National Observatory of Athens and is supported by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) National Collaboration Program.

Forecasts and monitoring of the phenomenon in real-time, according to CAMS data, are available on the AtmoHub portal: https://portal.atmohub.gr/erimiki-skoni
