Bulgaria attracts Turkish retirees seeking quieter life

Bulgaria is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for Turkish retirees seeking a quieter lifestyle, relatively lower living costs and the opportunity to live in an EU country.

The publication identifies Bulgaria’s proximity to Türkiye, EU membership, comparatively lower living costs and the possibility of obtaining residence permits under certain conditions among the main factors behind the choice, CE Report quotes BTA.

Turkish citizens who have settled in cities such as Ruse (on the Danube) and Plovdiv (Southern Bulgaria) cite less traffic and noise than in major Turkish cities, a more relaxed lifestyle and better compliance with traffic rules as advantages. Some said concerns they had initially had about security and relations with local residents had largely disappeared after settling in Bulgaria.

Existing Turkish communities in Bulgaria also play an important role, according to the report. Through social media and online groups, they exchange information about housing, administrative procedures, car purchases and everyday life.

The possibility for foreign retirees to settle in Bulgaria is another advantage. Foreign nationals receiving regular pension income may, under certain conditions, apply for a Type D visa and subsequently obtain a residence permit in Bulgaria, the publication said.

At the same time, The Turkish Post cautioned that the decision to move should not be based solely on the perception that living in Bulgaria is inexpensive. Rising property and basic goods prices, as well as healthcare and transport costs, should also be taken into account.

The publication said the choice of Bulgaria by Turkish retirees is driven not only by economic considerations but also by the search for a better quality of life and a calmer, less stressful environment.
