Moldova and Romania to Launch Joint Railway Electrification Project

Business

Moldova and Romania are set to implement a joint electrification project for the railway line connecting Iasi (Romania) and Ungheni (Moldova). The initiative, expected to take 36 months, could be a stepping stone toward extending the electrified railway to Chisinau, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

The project involves electrifying the existing railway line, including crossing the Prut River and the Moldova-Romania border. Additionally, maintenance and rehabilitation work will be carried out on the historic Eiffel Bridge, including replacing worn-out elements, setting fastenings and insulators, and installing brackets for the catenary system.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea emphasized the project's strategic importance, marking the first step in Moldova’s plan to electrify the Iasi–Ungheni–Chisinau railway corridor, part of the EU’s TEN-T network linking the Baltic, Black, and Aegean Seas.

To secure funding, the Moldovan Railway Company, in collaboration with the Romanian National Railway Company, has applied to the European Commission's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The start of construction depends on the contract signing, which is influenced by the procurement process duration.
