Tesla Sales Plunge in Europe

Business

Tesla's vehicle sales in Europe dropped sharply by 40.5% year-on-year in May, according to data released Wednesday by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). The company sold 8,729 units in the EU last month, down from 14,682 in May 2024, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

Across a broader European region — including the EU, EFTA, and the UK — Tesla’s sales fell 27.9% to 13,863 units.

In contrast, battery electric vehicle sales in Europe surged 27.2% to 193,493 units. Chinese automakers led the growth, more than doubling their sales to 65,808 units and increasing their market share to 5.9%, according to JATO Dynamics.

“Despite the EU’s tariffs on Chinese EVs, their brands continue to grow strongly in Europe,” said Felipe Munoz, a global analyst at JATO, citing their focus on alternative powertrains like plug-in and full hybrids.

Tesla’s decline is attributed to rising competition and growing backlash against CEO Elon Musk's controversial political actions and statements in the region.
