Plovdiv Customs Chief Remanded

Bulgaria

The Sofia City Court has ordered the detention of Miroslav Belyashki, Director of the Plovdiv Territorial Directorate of the National Customs Agency, following his arrest in a special police operation. He is accused of interfering with a customs inspection of a Georgian-registered truck carrying cigarettes en route to the Netherlands, CE Report quotes BTA

Prosecutors allege Belyashki traveled to the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint—outside his jurisdiction—without authorization, attempting to bypass inspection and ensure the truck's release. The court accepted that there is reasonable suspicion of an official offense.

Belyashki's defense argued that the detention was premature and unjustified, as the investigation is still in its early stages. The decision can be appealed, with a hearing scheduled for May 8 if necessary.

Authorities suggest more irregularities may be involved, including classified information and other suspects. The operation disrupted traffic and customs procedures at the Plovdiv office.
