Wizz Air earns top-level IATA SeMS certification
Low-cost airline Wizz Air has received IATA SeMS Level II certification, the highest possible level at the initial stage of certification under the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Security Management System (SeMS) standard. The certification assesses airlines’ risk management and proactive security culture.
According to the company’s announcement, Wizz Air became the first low-cost carrier and only the second airline in Europe to achieve this level of certification. The certification covers Wizz Air Hungary and Wizz Air Malta, which operate the airline’s flights across Europe, including to and from Bulgaria, CE Report quotes BTA.
The SeMS program, developed by IATA, promotes a safety culture focused on risk identification, management, and continuous improvement of security practices across the aviation industry.
“Achieving SeMS certification marks a key milestone that underscores our commitment to operational excellence and a proactive safety culture,” said Diarmuid O’Conghaile, Chief Operations Officer at Wizz Air. “Our teams will continue building on this strong foundation to further strengthen security management across the Wizz Air network.”
Certification of the Wizz Air Group’s UK operations is scheduled for the next phase of the program in 2026.
Frédéric Léger, IATA’s Senior Vice President for Products and Services, added:
“SeMS is vital for transforming global aviation security from a compliance-based approach to one that proactively identifies and mitigates risks while encouraging continuous improvement. Achieving this requires the full support of the aviation industry. Wizz Air stands among the leaders — not only as the first low-cost carrier to receive this certification but also for its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of aviation security.”
