National Geographic promotes the Albanian Riviera as an ideal destination for road trips, describing it as a coastal gem that offers much more than just tropical beaches, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
Best vacation packages
In a long article, National Geographic suggests Albania for unforgettable vacations, while mentioning three important archaeological sites: Orikum, Finiq and Butrint, which testify to the historical wealth of the area:
Embark on a journey along one of Albania’s most beautiful coastlines, from the city of Vlora in the north to the village of Ksamil in the south, in the heart of the Albanian Riviera, often called the “Maldives of Europe.” This region offers a magical combination of white-sand beaches and sparkling blue waters, traditional villages nestled among centuries-old olive groves, and archaeological sites that hold ancient history and memories from the communist era.
Day 1: History and hidden places on the hill
In the morning, visit Vlora, the birthplace of modern Albania, with the Independence Monument on Flag Square and the National Museum of Independence on Ismail Qemali Boulevard. Then head to the village of Radhimë for a fresh fish lunch, choose from the fish sold at the nearby market and enjoy it overlooking the small harbor.
In the afternoon, take a hike in the Llogara National Park along the path that, according to legend, Julius Caesar took. Then visit the Porto Palermo Castle, a 19th-century Ottoman fortress.
In the evening, take a stroll to the coastal village of Qeparo and enjoy a traditional village dinner, with local dishes and raki. It is a warm atmosphere among grape-covered verandas.
Day 2: Sea and natural resources
Start your day with a traditional breakfast of pancakes and Turkish coffee, then explore the village of Qeparo, walking through the narrow alleys and admiring the panoramic views. Then head to Bunec beach for swimming or kayaking.
Have lunch at traditional taverns and then explore the Blue Eye, a natural spring with crystal clear water, one of the natural wonders of Albania.
Spend the evening near Lake Butrint with a boat tour to learn how shellfish have been collected there for centuries, then enjoy local drinks and food near Ksamil.
Three archaeological sites to visit
Orikum: An ancient port and trading post with ruins from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.
Phoenicia: An ancient Greek city on a hill with Hellenistic theaters and underground communist bunkers.
Butrint: A UNESCO site with more than 2500 years of history, with Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian buildings, a Roman aqueduct and an ancient forum.
