Greece will temporarily suspend processing asylum applications from irregular migrants arriving by boat from Africa, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced in Parliament on Wednesday. The measure will initially last for three months, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia

"This emergency situation demands emergency response measures," Mitsotakis said, following a meeting with Migration Minister Thanos Plevris. Migrants entering illegally will be arrested and detained, he added.

The government also plans to set up one or two permanent closed detention centers on Crete and continue migration talks with Libya. Mitsotakis warned traffickers and migrants that Greece is closing its borders to illegal entry and that enforcement will be “legal and very severe.”
