EU says TikTok's algorithm may harm users' mental health
The European Union (EU) has accused TikTok of violating digital rules over its "For You" feed, which continuously recommends similar content to users.
The European Commission has published a statement outlining its preliminary findings in an investigation into TikTok's content recommendation system, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
According to the statement, TikTok's personalised "For You" video feed can repeatedly expose users to similar content related to mental health issues and body image.
The Commission noted that as users interact more with certain types of content, the algorithm recommends increasingly similar videos. This phenomenon, known as the "rabbit hole effect", could negatively affect the mental health of children and some adults.
The investigation found that TikTok had failed to adequately assess the risk of its recommendation algorithm drawing users into such content loops.
The Commission also warned that continuous exposure to this type of content could increase feelings of sadness and anxiety, adding that TikTok had not taken effective measures to address these risks.
At this stage of the investigation, the European Commission believes TikTok should redesign its "For You" feed.
TikTok will have the opportunity to submit a written response to the preliminary findings. If the alleged violation is confirmed in a final decision, the company could face a fine of up to 6% of its global annual turnover.
