India launches investigation into Meta over child abuse content
Police in India's capital, New Delhi, have launched an investigation into Meta after child sexual abuse material was found on the US-based technology company's platforms.
Priyank Kanoongo, a member of India's National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), announced the development in a post on his account on the US-based social media platform X, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
Kanoongo said that, following instructions from the NHRC, New Delhi police had prepared an investigative report concerning the presence of child sexual abuse material on Meta's platforms.
An investigation conducted by the BBC had previously revealed that Instagram was publishing paid advertisements in India that "promoted" child sexual abuse.
Following the investigation, the Indian government instructed Meta to remove all advertisements and content related to child sexual abuse from its platforms.
In September, Meta announced that it would begin directly reporting such cases to Indian authorities after paid advertisements promoting child sexual abuse content were uncovered on Instagram.
