EU introduces new rules for labeling AI-generated content
The European Union has published new implementation guidelines aimed at making content generated or modified by artificial intelligence easier to identify.
In a statement, the European Commission announced the adoption of voluntary implementation rules outlining how AI-generated or AI-altered content should be labeled, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
The Commission noted that the new rules will help implement the transparency obligations of the Artificial Intelligence Act, which will enter into force on August 2, 2026.
From that date, deepfake content, as well as AI-generated or AI-manipulated texts published on matters of public interest, will have to be clearly labeled. Citizens will also be informed when they are interacting with AI systems such as chatbots rather than human beings.
According to the Commission, the new rules will help people more easily determine whether the content they see or read online has been created by artificial intelligence.
The measures are particularly aimed at preventing the misuse of rapidly spreading deepfake content for disinformation and manipulation purposes. The rules will apply not only to companies developing AI systems but also to media organizations, websites, and other users producing content with these technologies.
Under the EU's Artificial Intelligence Act, various transparency requirements are being introduced to ensure that AI-generated content can be distinguished from authentic content.
The goal is to better protect citizens from misleading information, especially fake images, videos, and audio recordings.
