Canada warns of foreign AI risks

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that foreign artificial intelligence platforms could be used against Canadians.

Speaking at a press conference in Toronto where the government unveiled its AI strategy, Carney said Canada has become overly dependent on foreign suppliers, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

He emphasized that much of the data used in AI systems leaves the country, noting that artificial intelligence could potentially be used as a weapon against Canadians.

Carney pointed to risks associated with foreign organizations gaining access to Canadian data, stating:

“Canada lacks the power or ability to control this situation, while at the same time it puts Canadian companies at a competitive disadvantage.”

He said the government will introduce new legislation to better protect data and privacy, and announced plans to build a world-leading public AI supercomputer in Canada.

Carney also noted that Canada ranks near the bottom globally in AI education, literacy, and trust, adding that only 12% of Canadian businesses currently use artificial intelligence.
