BiH students win historic medal haul at International Mathematical Olympiad

Sarajevo Canton Education Minister Naida Hota-Muminović, representatives of the Sarajevo Canton Institute for the Development of Pre-University Education, and parents welcomed members of the Bosnia and Herzegovina team who achieved a historic success at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai, winning one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal, as well as two honorable mentions.

With smiles, hugs, and congratulations, the young Olympians were welcomed as true ambassadors of knowledge whose achievements made the entire country proud, CE Report quotes FENA.

Addressing the students, Minister Hota-Muminović said their success is a source of pride for the whole society and proof that knowledge, dedication, and systematic support for talented students always pay off.

"Behind every medal are years of hard work, sacrifice, a love of science, and immense dedication. You are the best ambassadors of Bosnia and Herzegovina and proof that our young people can stand shoulder to shoulder with the world's finest mathematicians. The Ministry will continue to be a reliable partner to talented students because investing in them means investing in the future of our society," the minister said.

As a demonstration of its commitment to providing continuous support to talented students, the Ministry financially supported the Bosnia and Herzegovina team's participation in the preparatory training camp and the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai, allocating around 20,000 BAM for this purpose.

The students shared their experiences from the competition in Shanghai, spoke about the challenges they faced during their preparations, and discussed their plans for future international competitions. It was emphasized that such achievements are not the result of chance but of many years of systematic work, high-quality mentoring, and continuous support from educational institutions.

During the 2025/2026 school year, Bosnia and Herzegovina won a total of 17 medals at the four most prestigious international mathematics olympiads. Students from Sarajevo Canton earned 11 of those medals, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the country's total, according to the Sarajevo Canton Protocol and Public Relations Service.
