Florida sues OpenAI over ChatGPT safety concerns
The U.S. state of Florida filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on Monday, alleging that the chatbot ChatGPT poses a threat to public safety and puts users at risk, according to dpa.
In the complaint filed by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, the state cites cases in which ChatGPT allegedly recommended a potentially fatal combination of medications and provided assistance to an attacker prior to a deadly attack on a university campus, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.
Uthmeier stated that the chatbot is particularly problematic for teenagers.
OpenAI has introduced measures aimed at protecting younger users, including age-detection systems and parental supervision tools. Some of these safeguards were implemented following public criticism and fatal incidents involving users.
ChatGPT, OpenAI’s flagship product, sparked the global boom in generative artificial intelligence and now has approximately 900 million weekly users, according to the company.
Florida had already launched an investigation in April into ChatGPT’s alleged role in the April 2025 shooting at Florida State University.
According to Uthmeier, the attacker asked the chatbot about firearms, ammunition compatibility, and where and when the largest number of people could be found on campus before carrying out the attack.
OpenAI rejected claims that ChatGPT was responsible for the attack, in which two people were killed and six others were injured.
