Ferrari unveils first electric car

Tech & Science

Italian luxury car manufacturer Ferrari has unveiled its first fully electric model, “Luce,” joining — somewhat late — competitors such as Porsche and Lamborghini, AFP reports.

“Luce,” which means “light” in Italian, reaches a top speed of over 310 kilometers per hour and offers a driving range of more than 530 kilometers, the company announced in a statement released Monday evening. The electric car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and is equipped with a 122 kWh battery, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

On the other hand, “Luce” weighs 2.26 tons, making it the heaviest model ever produced by the Italian brand. It is also only the second four-door Ferrari in the company’s history and the first five-seat model for a brand better known for its elegant two-seat sports cars.

“We are opening a new chapter that brings our vision to life, reinforcing Ferrari’s tradition of anticipating and shaping the future,” said chairman John Elkann.

The launch comes at a time when other automakers are slowing down their electric vehicle plans due to weaker-than-expected demand and a slower transition away from internal combustion engines.

Last year, Ferrari said it expected electric vehicles to account for 20% of its lineup by 2030, down from an earlier target of 40%.
