As of the end of December 2025, the number of active domain names with the “.tr” extension registered in the TRABİS system reached 1.3 million in Türkiye.

According to data compiled from the market reports of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), the management of “.tr” domain names began in 1991 under Middle East Technical University. With the Electronic Communications Law No. 5809 enacted in 2008, the authority to regulate domain name allocation and procedures was assigned to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

The “Internet Domain Names Regulation,” prepared by the Ministry, came into force after being published in the Official Gazette on November 7, 2010, granting BTK authority over the allocation of “.tr” domains.

New era with trabis

Within this framework, TRABİS became operational on September 14, 2022. Further updates to domain management were introduced through amendments published in the Official Gazette on June 10, 2023.

Under the system, priority in domain allocation is given to public institutions and organizations, as well as entities with majority public ownership that already held domain names at the time of implementation.

“First come, first served” rule

Fees for “a.tr” structured domains are set by the board, while domains such as “gov.tr, edu.tr, tsk.tr, bel.tr, and k12.tr” are allocated free of charge.

Before TRABİS, there were approximately 460,000 active domains in Türkiye. Since its launch in 2022, the total number has risen to 1.3 million.

The largest share belongs to “com.tr” domains with 988,743 registrations, followed by “.tr” (180,062), “org.tr” (29,974), and “net.tr” (27,386). Other extensions such as “.web,” “.av,” “.bel,” and “.edu” are also used for various professions.

Hosting data shows that 81.2% of these websites are based in Türkiye, while others are hosted in Germany (6%), United States (5.3%), France (2.1%), Netherlands (1.6%), Canada (0.9%), United Kingdom (0.7%), and other countries (2.2%).

Domain dispute resolution system

Within the scope of the regulation, procedures for the “Dispute Resolution Mechanism” (UÇM) were also established by BTK.

The TR Domain Name Dispute Resolution Center provides fast, effective, and fair solutions for conflicts related to the allocation, use, or infringement of “.tr” domains, offering alternatives to court proceedings.

Organizations such as BTİDER, Istanbul Arbitration Center, and TOBBUYUM work within this framework to resolve disputes without going to court.
