Romanian students win six medals at 43rd Balkan Mathematical Olympiad

Romanian students have achieved outstanding results at the 43rd Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO 2026), held between May 3–8 in Thessaloniki, Greece, winning one gold medal, one silver medal and four bronze medals.

The Romanian team included six students from leading high schools in Bucharest and Ploiești, CE Report informs via the statement of the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research on Facebook.

Andrei Vila from the International Computer High School of Bucharest won the gold medal, while David-Vlad Marghidan, also from the same school, secured silver.

Bronze medals were awarded to Mircea Maxim Rebengiuc from “Tudor Vianu” National College of Computer Science in Bucharest, Ștefan-Cătălin Savu from “Ion Luca Caragiale” National College in Ploiești, Aida Mitroi and Ciobotea Alexandru, both from the International Computer High School of Bucharest.

The Romanian delegation was coordinated by Associate Professor Dr. Cătălin Gherghe from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bucharest, who served as team leader, and accompanied by Professor Ovidiu Șontea from “Tudor Vianu” National College in Bucharest as deputy leader.

The Ministry of Education and Research stated that it continues to support Romania’s participation in international Olympiads by covering participation fees, travel expenses, daily allowances, and by organizing all national selection stages, including local, county, municipal and national competitions.

The Balkan Mathematical Olympiad 2026 brought together teams from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Türkiye, as well as invited teams from Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, France, Georgia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Malaysia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom.
