China launches SatNet test satellite with Cielong-3 rocket
China has launched a test satellite aimed at developing satellite internet technology using the Cielong-3 (Smart Dragon-3) rocket.
According to Xinhua, the SatNet test satellite was launched from a sea-based platform off the coast of Haiyang city on the Yellow Sea, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
The satellite successfully entered its planned position in Low Earth Orbit, marking the 11th successful mission of the Cielong-3 rocket.
Developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, the Cielong-3 rocket can carry payloads of up to 1.6 tons to a Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 500 kilometers.
The solid-fuel rocket is 31 meters long and 2.65 meters in diameter, featuring a four-stage ignition system. It is designed to meet growing demand in the commercial satellite market, with launch costs expected to drop below $10,000 per kilogram.
CALT previously launched three satellites into Sun-synchronous orbit in 2019 using the first-generation Cielong-1, which had a payload capacity of 200 kilograms.
The next-generation Cielong-4 is expected to carry up to 2.5 tons.
