AI helps decode dog barks to reveal emotions, behavior
Have you ever wondered what your dog is trying to tell you?
Researchers at the University of Michigan are exploring the possibilities of AI to develop tools that can identify whether a dog’s bark indicates playfulness or aggression.
This intelligent system can also extract other information from animal vocalizations, such as age, breed, and gender, CE Report quotes ATA.
The study, conducted in collaboration with the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) in Mexico, found that AI models initially tested on human speech can be used as a starting point for systems aimed at understanding animal communication.
The results were presented at the International Joint Conference on Computational Linguistics, Language Resources and Evaluation.
Researchers developed an artificial intelligence system capable of distinguishing dogs’ emotions and characteristics solely from their vocalizations.
Using a model known as “Wav2Vec2,” originally designed to understand human speech, scientists were able to interpret dog barks and determine whether they reflected playful or aggressive behavior.
The study analyzed recordings from 74 different dogs, captured in various contexts, and the AI system achieved up to 70% accuracy in classifying the sounds.
In addition to identifying emotions, the system could also determine the dogs’ age, gender, and breed.
This research opens new perspectives for understanding animal communication and could help owners better interpret their pets’ emotional and physical needs—improving their care and well-being.
Although the system does not translate “word for word” what dogs are saying, it can serve as a powerful tool for decoding the nuances of their vocalizations.
“Animal vocalizations are more difficult to record,” said Artem Abzaliev, the lead author of the study.
“They must be recorded passively in the wild or, in the case of domestic animals, with the owners’ permission,” he added.
A better understanding of the nuances in dog vocalizations can help people interpret and respond more effectively to their emotional and physical needs, improving care and preventing potentially dangerous situations.
