Meta smart glasses face court ban over recording concerns

Meta smart glasses have been banned from court buildings in England and Wales.

According to The Guardian, His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS), which is responsible for criminal, civil and family courts in England and Wales, has stated that people attempting to enter court buildings wearing Meta smart glasses will have the glasses confiscated, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

An HMCTS spokesperson said there are clear restrictions on taking photographs or recording video in courts and judicial institutions, meaning the use of Meta smart glasses is prohibited.

The spokesperson added that people arriving at court or judicial buildings wearing Meta glasses will have them taken from them at the entrance and returned when they leave the building.

As recording images or video inside court buildings without official permission is prohibited in England, such actions can constitute contempt of court and may result in criminal proceedings.

The decision regarding the glasses produced by US technology company Meta comes after New York courts banned the devices last month.

Meta smart glasses have sparked controversy because they can record video while being worn by users.

The camera-equipped glasses allow users to record people, their surroundings and private moments without permission and to livestream the footage through platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
