South Korea plans special zones to attract AI investment

The South Korean government plans to introduce legislation this year to designate special zones across the country for artificial intelligence-related investment projects.

According to Yonhap, Kang Hoon-sik, a senior official at the Presidential Office, discussed the government’s plans in comments to reporters following a meeting on progress in AI projects, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

Kang said the government intends to pass legislation within the year to establish designated areas for AI-related investment projects.

Highlighting the potential benefits of the proposed law, Kang said it would accelerate licensing procedures as well as environmental impact assessments.

He added that the legislation would enable the rapid construction of electricity and water infrastructure required for the projects, while also allowing authorities to quickly provide workers with necessary facilities and services, including transportation, housing and education.

In June, the South Korean government announced three mega-projects involving large-scale investment plans in rural areas focused on semiconductor manufacturing, artificial intelligence and data centers.
