EU launches probe into X after AI-generated fake sexually explicit images
The European Commission announced that it has launched a formal investigation under the Digital Services Act into Elon Musk’s X platform after its artificial intelligence tool, Grok, generated fake sexually explicit images.
In a statement, the Commission said the investigation will examine whether the risks related to the deployment of Grok’s functions on X in the EU were properly assessed, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
The statement emphasized the need to mitigate risks related to the spread of illegal content in the EU, including manipulated sexual images and child sexual abuse material, recalling that such risks have materialized and that EU citizens have been exposed to serious harm.
Grok, the AI tool on the X social media platform, began generating non-consensual sexual content and sexual images involving children in early January, triggering widespread backlash.
The EU’s Digital Services Act imposes strict rules on major social media platforms, including X.
Separately, the EU is also assessing whether X has violated EU laws in areas such as risk management, content moderation, algorithmic systems, advertising transparency, and data access for researchers.
Last month, the EU fined X €120 million for failing to comply with the bloc’s digital regulations.
