Study reveals mental-health risks among ChatGPT users
More than one million users of ChatGPT send messages each week indicating explicit suicidal intentions or plans, according to new research published by OpenAI, CE Report quotes ANSA.
The study also notes that around 0.07% of active users in a given week display “possible signs of mental-health emergencies related to psychosis or mania”.
The data comes at a time when OpenAI is under increased scrutiny following a lawsuit brought by the family of a teenager who died by suicide after extensive interaction with ChatGPT. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission has launched a broad investigation into AI-chatbot companies, including OpenAI, to examine how they measure negative impacts on children and adolescents.
OpenAI says its latest update (GPT-5) includes improved user safety features and expanded access to crisis hotlines, and that it enlisted 170 medical professionals in recent months to help improve its model’s handling of serious mental-health situations.
