2025 Nobel laureates in Medicine revealed
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their discovery of the mechanism by which the immune system responds to infections, CE Report quotes ANSA.
Americans Brunkow and Ramsdell, together with Japanese scientist Sakaguchi, were recognized for uncovering the mechanisms that regulate peripheral immune tolerance — the process that prevents the immune system from attacking the body itself.
Their research paved the way to understanding and combating autoimmune diseases, in which the immune system mistakenly targets the organism it belongs to.
Their most significant contribution was the identification of regulatory T cells, which act as sentinels, keeping immune cells under control and preventing them from attacking the body.
“Their discoveries have been decisive for understanding how the immune system functions,” said Olle Kämpe, President of the Nobel Committee.
The discovery, he added, helps explain “why not all of us develop severe autoimmune diseases.”
