Portugal denies pressure to feed Ronaldo

Portugal forward Francisco Conceição has rejected claims that national team players feel pressured to constantly pass the ball to captain Cristiano Ronaldo following Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After Portugal’s opening match, criticism emerged in Portuguese media and on social networks over the team’s performance. Some reports suggested that players were either avoiding Ronaldo or trying to involve him in every attacking move. Conceição dismissed those claims, insisting that the team’s priority is winning rather than focusing on the statistics of one individual player, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

“We do not feel the need to pass the ball to him,” Conceição said. “I pass to whoever I think is in the best position and is unmarked.”

The forward also praised Ronaldo’s influence within the squad, describing the veteran striker as a leader who continues to motivate the team despite being 41 years old.

“Cristiano is an example because of his career and the hunger he still has at the age of 41. He is an example of leadership and the goals he scores,” said the Juventus player during a press conference.

Portugal will look to respond in their next match against Uzbekistan after the opening draw increased pressure on coach Roberto Martínez and his squad. However, Portuguese players have insisted that the team remains united and focused on achieving results together.
