Trump booed by fans during NBA finals game in New York
U.S. President Donald Trump was met with loud boos and expressions of disapproval from fans at Madison Square Garden in New York during Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game in person.
Attending as a guest of Knicks president James Dolan, Trump appeared on the arena's giant screen during the national anthem, prompting a strong negative reaction from many spectators throughout the venue. Despite the response, the president was seen smiling from his luxury suite, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
Speaking before departing from JFK Airport, Trump downplayed the incident.
"I thought it was amazing, actually. You mean the moment when the cameras turned toward me? I thought it was very nice," he said.
The president's presence significantly increased security measures in Midtown Manhattan, resulting in long queues and strict security checks that left many fans unable to enter the arena before the start of the game, Reuters reported.
Errol Ismail, a resident of Brooklyn, expressed frustration over the situation.
"I wish he wasn't here. He's not a real fan and he's just making things terrible. We've waited our whole lives for this, and he made it all about himself, like everything else," he said.
On the court, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the New York Knicks 115-111, reducing the Knicks' lead in the NBA Finals series to 2-1.
