The Looney Tunes comeback fans fought for
“Dedicated to everyone who made posts, shared them, held up signs and made their voices heard when it was necessary. This film made it to the big screen thanks to you.”
That is the message included in the end credits of Coyote vs. Acme, directed by Dave Green, a brilliant live-action and animated comedy that finally reached audiences despite Warner Bros.’ initial decision to cancel its release in 2022, CE Report quotes ANSA.
The film arrives in US cinemas on August 28 and will be released in Italy on September 2 through Lucky Red, with a special preview event on August 28 at The Space Moderno in Rome.
The animated star of the story is Wile E. Coyote, one of the most beloved of the wild Looney Tunes characters. He is endlessly determined, despite always failing in his elaborate attempts to catch — and eat — the incredibly fast and clever Road Runner, Beep Beep, during their endless desert chases.
The animation icon is joined by many other Looney Tunes favorites, including Daffy Duck, Granny, Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd. The live-action co-star is Will Forte, with Lana Condor and John Cena also part of the cast.
Behind the film’s eventual release was the determination of its filmmakers and fans. Four years ago, Warner Bros. decided to cancel Coyote vs. Acme even though production had already been completed. The film joined other projects that suffered a similar fate, including Batgirl and Scoob!, which were still unfinished.
The campaign to prevent the approximately $70 million film from being forgotten eventually led the studio to allow the producers — including James Gunn, who also co-wrote the story — to search for another distributor. A deal was ultimately reached with Ketchup Entertainment.
Now, the response is in the hands of audiences, although critics have already praised the movie, calling Coyote vs. Acme one of the year’s most successful comedies.
Green immediately embraced the project because he considers Wile E. Coyote “the most optimistic of all the Looney Tunes.” The director explained that the character wakes up every day convinced that he will finally catch the Road Runner. He creates a plan, spends the day trying to capture him, fails, and then tries again the next day.
“I think there is a real life lesson in this character,” Green said. “His passion, resilience and perseverance are incredible demonstrations of optimism. He never stops trying. On top of that, he is incredibly funny.”
The story is inspired by Ian Frazier’s short story of the same name, published in The New Yorker in 1990. In the film, Wile E. Coyote — who, as in Chuck Jones’ cartoons, does not speak but expresses himself creatively — becomes increasingly frustrated and decides to sue the multinational company Acme.
Acme manufactures all the devices he has used over the years to try to catch the Road Runner, many of which turn out to be defective — from super skates that inevitably become uncontrollable to rockets that explode when they are not supposed to.
The coyote turns to lawyer Kevin Avery, played by Will Forte, who is more accustomed to negotiating cheap settlements than fighting cases in court. However, Willy’s determination convinces him to take on the powerful Acme corporation.
The story introduces, alongside various forms of comedy — from slapstick to more emotional moments — a sharp satire of the enormous power held by technology and media giants.
“There is a certain reflection of today’s society,” Forte said. “Maybe it wasn’t even our original intention, but after what happened to the film, parallels emerged between Acme and the situation we experienced with Warner Bros. It seems that the power of these multinational corporations continues to grow enormously every year.”
Green said he would be happy if the film managed to capture the same level of social commentary found in some of the classic Looney Tunes shorts.
“They were always intelligent and profound, genuinely trying to reflect the culture in which people lived at the time. So I find it particularly appropriate that in 2026 the film is about a giant corporation trying to crush someone who is weaker.”
