Mistrial Declared in Maradona Death Case

Sports

An Argentine court declared a mistrial on Thursday in the high-profile negligence case against seven health professionals over the death of soccer legend Diego Maradona, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

The mistrial was triggered by Judge Julieta Makintach’s recusal after her involvement in a forthcoming documentary raised questions about her impartiality. Judge Maximiliano Savarino ruled that her withdrawal compromised the court’s objectivity, annulling two and a half months of hearings that included testimony from over 40 witnesses.

A new trial will be scheduled, likely causing several months of delay. Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title, died in November 2020 following brain surgery. Prosecutors allege that his death was preventable and due to negligent care by the defendants.
