Jan Oblak becomes greatest goalkeeper in La Liga history

Jan Oblak has become the most successful goalkeeper in the history of La Liga, the premier football league of Spain, having won his sixth Zamora Trophy, an award that goes to the goalkeeper who has the lowest goals-to-games ratio.

Prior to this year's accolade, the 32-year-old captain of the Slovenian national team, who has been a member of Atletico Madrid since 2014, won four Ricardo Zamora Trophies between 2016 and 2019, and one in 2021, CE Report quotes The Slovenia Times.

The trophy is named after the goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora, who played for Espanyol, Barcelona and Real Madrid a century ago. It was established by the Spanish newspaper Marca and has been conferred since 1958.

The award goes to the goalkeeper who has the lowest goals-to-games ratio, with the condition that he has to play at least 60 minutes in at least 28 games.

Oblak has surpassed legendary Barcelona goalkeepers Victor Valdes and Antonio Ramallets, who boast five awards each.

The Slovenian has conceded 30 goals in 36 La Liga matches this season, for a goals-to-games ratio of 0.83. He is followed by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, and Getafe's David Soria.

Oblak did not play in the last match of the season in Girona, as it had no competitive significance. His club finished third behind Barcelona and Real Madrid, and has qualified for the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League.
