Argentina captain Lionel Messi arrived in his homeland for a family holiday in his hometown of Rosario, AFP reports.

Messi and Argentina lost to Spain in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday, and he did not attend the celebrations held in Buenos Aires, CE Report quotes STA.

The Argentine football icon landed in Rosario on a private flight at around 6:30 a.m. local time, accompanied by his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and their three children, according to a source cited by AFP.

Sports broadcaster ESPN published a video showing the 39-year-old star driving a grey minivan into a gated community in the city of Funes, on the outskirts of Rosario, where he owns a home and usually stays whenever he returns to the region.

Messi's arrival in Argentina also coincides with health concerns involving his father, Jorge Messi, who is also his agent and one of his closest supporters.
