The laying of the foundation stone marked the start of construction on a new football stadium in Zagreb with a capacity of 11,163 seats, located in Kranjčevićeva Street, on the site of the previous one.

A total of €38 million (excluding VAT) will be invested in the construction of the new sports arena, which will be fully funded from the city budget, according to a press release, CE Report quotes HINA.

"This is a historic day for Zagreb football. Since 1969, when the southern stand of Maksimir was built, Zagreb has not had a new football stadium with all four stands. Many have listened for decades about a new stadium and did not believe it would actually happen... In 18 months, we will have a new stadium in Kranjčevićeva, and by 2029, we will also have one in Maksimir," said Mayor Tomislav Tomašević.

The dimensions of the main pitch will be 105x68 meters, meeting the UEFA criteria for a Category 4 stadium. The new complex will include a new city square of 6,300 m2, parking for more than 400 vehicles, and supporting facilities for athletes and fans.

The project also includes the installation of a 1MW solar power plant, which will significantly contribute to the energy independence of the new stadium.
