Romania Proposes Online Safety Law for Kids
Romanian senators from the National Liberal Party (PNL) have introduced a new legislative proposal to Parliament aimed at protecting minors online. The bill, announced by Defence Committee Chair Senator Nicoleta Pauliuc, sets the digital age of consent at 16. Under the proposed law, children under 16 would need explicit parental consent to access and create accounts on online platforms, CE Report quotes Agerpres
“This is not a law to ban or scare, but to give parents real tools to protect their children,” said Pauliuc during a Senate debate on online child safety. The law would apply to all online services, including social media, gaming, and entertainment platforms, and would allow parents to suspend accounts or request content restrictions.
The initiative comes as the EU prepares to launch a privacy-focused age verification app in July. Pauliuc emphasized Romania’s role in shaping digital child protection standards in Europe, calling for political unity and swift action, warning that delays in legislation “sometimes cost lives.”
The proposal was presented at an event attended by lawmakers, IT professionals, and civil society groups.
