Defence Ministry: Romania working with NATO to protect airspace - EXCLUSIVE
The Ministry of National Defence of Romania continuously monitors the security situation in the vicinity of Romania's borders and, together with Allied structures, implements all necessary measures to protect Romanian and NATO airspace.

Romania remains in constant consultation with its NATO Allies through established coordination and information-sharing mechanisms, and response measures are continuously adapted in line with the evolving security environment.
Any diplomatic steps are handled by the competent Romanian authorities in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in accordance with diplomatic practice and Romania's national security interests.
At the same time, the Ministry of National Defence continues to strengthen Romania's air defence capabilities and continuously assesses the need to further adapt the legal and procedural framework to ensure an effective response to threats posed by unauthorized drones and other aerial systems.
The Ministry of National Defence continuously monitors the security situation in the region and maintains a high level of vigilance in the context of developments generated by the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Recent incidents involving drones in the vicinity of or within Romania’s airspace are constantly assessed by the competent authorities, in accordance with national procedures and Romania’s commitments within NATO. The confirmation of the type of drone involved and the analysis of each incident are carried out based on available data and information collected by the relevant structures.
Romania continuously adapts its air surveillance and air defence measures in accordance with the evolution of the security situation and the identified level of risk. These measures include strengthening monitoring capabilities, enhancing response readiness, and maintaining close cooperation with NATO Allies, particularly in the Black Sea region.
With regard to actions taken against unmanned aerial vehicles entering Romania’s national airspace, decisions are made based on the specific circumstances of each case, while respecting national legislation, applicable procedures, and international law.
The Ministry of National Defence cannot provide details regarding operational procedures or rules of engagement, as these are part of the specific domain of defence activities. The priority of the institution remains the protection of national territory and the population, as well as maintaining security in close cooperation with Romania’s Allies and partners.
