Anti-government protests in Albania enter 50th day

Now in its 50th consecutive day, the civic uprising in Tirana has evolved. What began as opposition to the Zvërnec development has escalated into widespread demands for the resignation of Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama and his government.

After gathering in Skanderbeg Square, protesters marched down the Martyrs of the Nation Boulevard to the Prime Minister’s Office, CE Report quotes ATA.

They voiced their opposition to the development project while demanding broader reforms for protected areas and strategic investments.

During the gathering at Skanderbeg Square, an activist explained that the protests aim to hold lawmakers accountable and demonstrate that citizens feel unrepresented by the current Parliament. He then announced a morning protest for July 23, stating, ‘Let’s show Parliament that they do not represent us and that we reject their performance. We have planned further actions for the coming days.

Surpassing 50 days of resistance, activist Edison Lika affirmed that the anti-government protests will not cease until citizens’ demands are fully met. ‘This movement will only end when Albanians no longer feel forced to flee, and those who left can finally return home. It will only stop when our parliament is no longer controlled by oligarchs and criminals, but truly represents the people,’ he stated.

Brandishing national flags and placards, the demonstrators called for the repeal of controversial amendments to the Law on Protected Areas, comprehensive electoral reform, and the removal of the country’s long-standing political establishment.
