Macron, Merz to discuss Ukraine and European security
During a meeting of the Intergovernmental Council, the leaders of France and Germany will discuss support for Ukraine, peace and security in Europe, as well as strengthening defense cooperation.
Emmanuel Macron made this statement in Bensberg, Germany, before the start of talks with Friedrich Merz, CE Report quotes Ukrinform.
“During these talks, we will, of course, return to the main international issues—our support for Ukraine, peace and security in Europe, as well as the situation in the Near and Middle East,” said the French president.
He also mentioned the military parade held on July 14 in Paris to mark Bastille Day: “It was very important to see the President of Ukraine on the Champs-Élysées alongside the Coalition of the Willing, as well as the servicemen of this coalition, who marched in the parade alongside our troops.”
Macron emphasized that such a demonstration of unity was evidence of the emergence of a “Europe of strength” and a symbol of the continent’s strategic awakening.
According to him, Paris and Berlin also intend to give new impetus to the bilateral and European agenda in the field of security and defense.
“When it comes to extended deterrence, early warning, deep-strike capabilities, and joint capabilities, we want to inject new momentum,” the French leader explained.
He added that France and Germany also plan to deepen cooperation in space, quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, and energy.
As previously reported, Friedrich Merz and Emmanuel Macron will hold a meeting of the Franco-German Defense and Security Council on Friday, as well as the 26th meeting of the Franco-German Ministerial Council.
