The Republic of Moldova could benefit from an accelerated European integration process and from concrete advantages even before obtaining full membership of the European Union.

Germany and France are preparing a new initiative aimed at offering candidate countries additional rewards for implementing the reforms required for accession, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

According to a position paper seen by the dpa news agency, the two states propose that candidate countries making progress in the integration process should receive privileged access to the EU single market and the possibility to appoint observers to European Union institutions.

The initiative targets six Western Balkan states, as well as the Republic of Moldova, and is designed to stimulate reforms and provide tangible benefits before actual accession.

The document states that the measure aims to give new political momentum to EU enlargement policy and to encourage candidate countries to accelerate the implementation of reforms requested by Brussels.

The proposal is expected to be officially presented on Friday at the EU–Western Balkans summit in Tivat by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

For the Republic of Moldova, the initiative could represent an important step towards closer ties with European institutions and the early use of economic benefits of integration before full EU membership.

The issue of enlargement will also be addressed at the EU–Republic of Moldova summit scheduled for June 22 in Brussels, an event considered one of the most important moments on Chișinău’s European agenda this year.
