North Macedonia's President urges greater Roma political participation
President of North Macedonia Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova held a meeting with Veljko Kajtazi, representative of 12 national minorities in the Croatian Parliament (Sabor), and a delegation of the Roma Union of Croatia “Kali Sara,” led by its President Suzana Krčmar.
The focus of the meeting was the situation of the Roma community, the need to improve their rights, and opportunities for sharing best practices, CE Report informs via the President of North Macedonia's official website.
Siljanovska-Davkova stated that Roma people are an important part of Macedonian society and a significant factor in its cultural and democratic development.
The interlocutors discussed the challenges faced by Roma, particularly in education, employment, and the fight against discrimination. The President stressed that these issues require continuous commitment and joint action by institutions, civil society, and representatives of the Roma community.
She praised the work of Veljko Kajtazi and “Kali Sara” in promoting the Roma language, culture, and history, as well as their contribution to the international recognition of November 5 as the World Day of the Roma Language.
According to her, the Roma language is an important part of the cultural identity of the Roma people, and its preservation and transmission to younger generations is of particular importance.
The guests highlighted the exceptional merits of Mr. Veljko Kajtazi in protecting and advancing Roma rights. They emphasized education in the Roma language as a priority, as well as the need for greater visibility of Roma and their political engagement at all levels.
“If Roma do not engage in politics, then politics will engage with them inadequately and without them,” Siljanovska-Davkova said, encouraging young Roma to participate in politics.
In conclusion, the President stressed that the exchange of good practices can contribute to more successful regional policies for Roma communities.
