US democrats introduce “war powers” bill to block strike on Cuba
In the United States, Democrats have introduced a “war powers” bill aimed at preventing the Washington administration from launching a military operation against Cuba without approval from Congress.
The bill was presented to Congress by Democratic senators Tim Kaine, Ruben Gallego, and Adam Schiff, and it is expected to be voted on by the end of the month, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
Kaine said in a statement that, according to the U.S. Constitution, only Congress has the authority to declare war. However, he criticized President Donald Trump, saying that he acts “as if the U.S. military were a palace guard,” ordering military actions in the Caribbean, Venezuela, and Iran without congressional approval or explaining his actions to the American public.
Gallego also said that Trump ran his election campaign with the slogan “America First,” but has become “a puppet of the war-hawks in his party.”
Trump, who has recently increased economic sanctions on Cuba, previously said that the country “will fall very soon.”
The 1973 War Powers Act requires that any decision by the U.S. president to start a war against another country must receive approval from Congress, and it obliges the president to inform Congress in advance about such actions.
