Trump renews Greenland push at Davos Forum
US President Donald Trump said in his opening speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos that he “will not use force” to take control of Greenland, which immediately triggered a rise in global stock market indices, DPA reported.
He again insisted that the United States needs ownership of the large Arctic territory in order to establish a missile defense system and ensure international security, CE Report quotes MIA.
“You can’t defend it with a lease,” Trump said.
Only the US “is in a position to secure Greenland,” he told leaders in Davos.
He said he is “seeking urgent negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States.”
During the high-level gathering at the Swiss Alpine resort, Trump has scheduled a number of meetings related to Greenland.
European NATO allies expressed solidarity with Denmark and Greenland, but Trump said that from February 1, he will impose punitive tariffs to put pressure on opponents of the sale of the Arctic island to the US.
Trump said that the US position on acquiring Greenland from Denmark has not changed:
“You can say yes and we will be very grateful, or you can say no and we will not forget it.”
