Historic moment: German MP addresses Bundestag holding infant
German lawmaker Hanna Steinmuller is pushing for greater participation of children in everyday life, after becoming the first member of parliament to address the Bundestag while holding a baby in her arms.
Steinmuller, from the Green Party, was holding her young son when she delivered a speech in the Bundestag, CE Report quotes ATA.
“This wasn’t planned,” Steinmuller told the newspaper Tagesspiegel.
“I just brought my son because he was sleeping. I thought, if I hand him to a colleague now, I would wake him up,” she added.
The 32-year-old Steinmuller praised Bundestag President Julia Klockner for allowing lawmakers to bring their children into the chamber while they are still breastfeeding.
However, this is the first time a female lawmaker addressed a plenary session while holding a baby.
Steinmuller told Tagesspiegel that it was important for her to show that children are part of everyday life.
She said the common expectation remains that childcare can be organized throughout the day.
“But many people are unable to do this, especially single parents,” she emphasized.
“We believe the government should speak more about the millions of people who have to balance work and childcare every day,” the Greens, who are in opposition, posted on social media.
They highlighted the importance of having political leaders who understand what it means to take care of a child.
