Trump envoy Steven Witkoff arrives in Moscow
U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steven Witkoff, arrived in Moscow this morning.
Witkoff "was received at Vnukovo Airport by Russian President’s special representative Kirill Dmitriev," CE Report quotes ANSA.
The U.S. envoy is expected to meet with Russian leaders just days before the deadline set by Trump for Moscow to halt its offensive in Ukraine.
Witkoff, Trump's right-hand man for "peace missions," has met with Vladimir Putin several times before, though none of these meetings have led the Russian president to change course in the war against Kyiv.
Relations between Moscow and Washington have sharply escalated since last week, following Trump's decision to deploy two nuclear submarines after an online spat with former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev.
Last week, Trump gave Russia 10 days—until Friday—to stop its offensive in Ukraine, warning of new sanctions if it fails to comply. He specifically threatened to impose "secondary tariffs" on countries that continue trading with Moscow, such as China and India.
"Tomorrow we have a meeting with Russia—we’ll see what happens and make our decision then," Trump said yesterday.
