Moldova Denies Delays in Plahotniuc Extradition from Greece

Politics

Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru has rejected claims that Moldovan authorities are delaying the extradition of former Democratic Party leader Vladimir Plahotniuc from Greece. She stated that all steps were taken in line with national law and international conventions, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Plahotniuc was detained at Athens International Airport on July 22 while attempting to leave Greece. The General Prosecutor’s Office submitted the extradition request on July 24, and the Ministry of Justice followed with its own request on August 4.

“The accusations of delay are unfounded,” Mihailov-Moraru said, noting that extradition is being handled according to the European Convention, which allows a 40-day period for documentation submission. She emphasized that both the Justice Ministry and Prosecutor’s Office are actively involved, and Greece will decide on the next steps.

The case comes after Plahotniuc’s lawyer accused authorities in Chisinau of stalling the process. Plahotniuc, who fled Moldova in 2019, faces charges of fraud, money laundering, and leading a criminal group.

Former MP Constantin Țuțu was also detained, and documents with false identities were seized during searches.
