Greece Halts North Africa Asylum
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told Germany's Bild that Greece is “not an open corridor to Europe,” defending the government’s recent decision to suspend asylum applications for migrants arriving by boat from North Africa, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia
Mitsotakis described the move as “difficult but essential,” citing a sharp rise in irregular sea arrivals, particularly from Libya to Crete. He warned traffickers and migrants that illegal entries would not lead to legal settlement, and said the policy aims to deter dangerous journeys and disrupt trafficking networks.
Greece, he added, is prepared to work with Libyan authorities to curb departures and called for a unified European response. “This is not just Greece’s responsibility—it is Europe’s,” he stressed.
