Greece Unveils New Citizen ID Number

Politics

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis chaired a ministerial meeting on Monday to introduce the new Personal Citizen Number, which will be added to police ID cards. This unique number will replace multiple existing identifiers, like tax and social security numbers, simplifying transactions with the public sector, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonian

“This is a key step toward modernising the state,” Mitsotakis said. The new number will ensure all personal data is accurate and interconnected across government systems, addressing long-standing gaps. It will be generated via the myInfo app on gov.gr, with citizens able to verify and update their data.

The updated police ID cards, featuring the new Personal Number, will start phasing out old ‘blue’ IDs in line with EU directives. Citizens are encouraged to apply quickly, especially outside major cities, where waiting times are shorter. Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou described the reform as “a real breakthrough for Greek public administration.”
