Russia’s leadership has openly defended crime rings in Moldova, following the detention of Evghenia Gutul, the Bashkan (governor) of Gagauzia. Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, condemned her arrest, which relates to a case of electoral fraud, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi responded, stating that the Kremlin, known for persecuting opposition figures and silencing dissent, is not in a position to lecture on democracy.

Popsoi emphasized that the detention of Gutul, linked to the Shor crime group, falls under the jurisdiction of Moldovan prosecutors. Gutul was arrested at Chisinau Airport on March 25 in connection with illegal election funding, document forgery, and electoral fraud. She is currently in the custody of the National Anticorruption Centre.
