Moldova to Launch Russian-Language TV Channel to Combat Disinformation

Politics

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has expressed support for the launch of a new national TV channel, Moldova 3, which will broadcast in Russian. In an interview with Radio France Internationale, she emphasized the need to provide Russian-speaking citizens with access to objective information from Moldova rather than relying on media from Moscow, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Sandu acknowledged public debate around the initiative but stressed that many citizens do not understand Romanian. While the government promotes free Romanian language courses, she said it is crucial to offer reliable news in Russian as well.

She also highlighted the importance of ensuring high-quality content on the new channel. “We must make efforts in learning the Romanian language, but we must also guarantee access to objective information,” she stated.

The move follows the registration of a draft law in Parliament on March 12, proposing Russian-language broadcasts on National Television. The initiative, led by PAS deputies Eugen Sinchevici and Natalia Davidovici, aims to counter disinformation and provide Russian speakers with accurate news.
