Moldova to Establish New Prosecutor’s Office to Combat Corruption and Organized Crime

Politics

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean has emphasized that reforms in the prosecution system should focus on strengthening the state's ability to fight corruption and organized crime, rather than individual appointments. His remarks follow the introduction of a draft law in parliament proposing the creation of the Prosecutor’s Office of Anticorruption and Combating Organized Crime, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

The new institution will result from the merger of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office (PA) and the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Causes (PCCOCS). Recean highlighted that organized crime has evolved beyond traditional activities like money laundering and drug trafficking, now prioritizing corruption, including electoral fraud.

The prime minister acknowledged public disappointment with previous reforms and stressed the necessity of restructuring. He pointed out that Moldova has an excessive number of prosecutors relative to its population and allocates significant resources to anti-corruption efforts without achieving desired results.

A group of MPs from the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) has submitted the draft law for public consultation.
